La Casa Rosada - Our Home in San Cristobal

After spending the night in Mexico City, we flew to the airport in Tuxtla Gutierrez, the capital of the state of Chiapas.  A forty-five minute taxi ride brought us to the beautiful highland town (7000ft) of San Cristobal de las Casas.  We arrived Saturday afternoon.  Sebastian was still cleaning our house, so we had lunch at a cute café at the end of the block and then did some grocery shopping.

We slept well our first night after a day-and-a-half of airplanes and airports.  At this altitude, the nights are crisp, but the days are sunny and in the seventies.  We walked to the ten a.m. sacrament meeting at the San Cristobal Ward chapel.  We stayed for all three hours; Sara didn't understand a lot; but, we felt the spirit of the members there.  It was fast Sunday.  On the way home we stopped in an Italian restaurant for wood-fired pizza and fresh limonadas.  The restaurant was owned and run by two brothers from Sicily.

We are very happy with our adobe house.  It is very old, but has been restored.  We have a living room with a fireplace, a nice, big bedroom, a pretty kitchen with colorful tiles, and a bathroom with a tiled shower.  The other half off our house is a similar set up.  It is rented to an English woman who is about our age.  She is an anthropologist from Cambridge!  She seem very nice.  The two grown sons of the owner live in a separate house on the property, too.

Last evening we walked four blocks to the central plaza and people watched.   Many of the people here are of Maya descent, and many, coming in from the local villages, wear their traditional costumes.  Then we came home and watched a Netflix movie on the laptop.  "The Bucket List"  That seemed appropriate.

Today we went to a Spanish-language school to see about classes for Sara, and checked about tours to some of the Maya ruins.  Then we went to the big Indian fruit and vegetable market, which is only a few blocks from our house.  Sara was not much interested in buying a live chicken for dinner.  Chicken eggs were okay, though.

We will post this now.  If we can figure out how to upload some pictures, we will do that too.  We just tried, and had a very frustrating experience!
