Waking up Friday morning in San Cristobal after our three days away was just like returning from a short vacation at home. We had laundry to do and groceries that needed to be restocked. However, the way we accomplished those things was not the way we would have in Portland.
No automatic washer and dryer here. I took our very sweaty clothes over to the lavanderia three blocks a way. At ten pesos per kilo, our clothes were washed, dried and folded for four dollars. Note the scale handing in the doorway. No walking into the laundry, you just put your clothes in the scale, then the senora writes your name on a slip of paper with the cost and gives it to you. Bring it back and pay when you pick them up the next day.
No driving the car (what car?) to Fred Meyer or Winco, either. Sara and I walked up the always-packed street, past tons of street vendors to the big market and our grocery store across the street from it. Fresh produce and meats come the from market stalls, the rest from the grocery store. We love the market because of the mass of humanity there, not to mention the amazing display of colors, smells and sounds.
Yesterday morning, while Sara was doing some light housekeeping, I went back up to the market to take photos. It was bustling on a Saturday morning. I just stood back, out of the way with my telephoto lens, and tried not to be too intrusive. Here are some of the pictures I took. I just love it there! It is so authentic.
Walking the five blocks up to the market is difficult because the street is filled with cars and people, and the sidewalks and edges of the street are filled with vendors.
.
There is a market building; but, we almost never go in it. The large open area in front of it and the streets and sidewalks all around it are a warren of stalls and vendors selling all kinds of stuff. Almost all the vendors are Mayan, speaking more Tzotzil than Spanish.
After taking pictures of the goods, I stood back and took pictures of people.
Did you see the turkey?
Yes I saw the turkey! Life will be a little dull (in color, at least) when you return to Portland! Is that all one way traffic?
