El Raton en el Bano

The bathroom
The second or third day after we arrived, I was in the kitchen washing dishes after dinner and I hear the bathroom door slam and Sara shout that there is a rat in the shower!  Yikes!!!  She had gone to brush her teeth and had stepped into the shower stall to open the window.  She heard what she thought was a bird chirp.  Then she looked down and there was a rat coming up out of the shower drain.  It just pushed the loose drain cover off and came out!  She told me, "Go do something!"

I carefully opened the bathroom door and looked in.  As I wasn't immediately attacked by a rabid animal, I cautiously stepped in and looked in the shower stall.  Sure enough, there was a big rat in the corner!  I made some noise and stamped my foot, which must have scared him, because he ran around in a couple circles, pooped twice, and dived back down the drain.  I pushed the drain cover back in place with my foot, and had Sara bring me a heavy doorstop which I placed over the drain.

When we went to bed that night I was conscious of not letting my feet or hands hang over the edge of the bed.  The next morning I was a little nervous about looking in the shower; but, the cover was still in place.  We moved the doorstop off just slightly to shower.  As soon as we heard the boys up, I went and told them about the rat.  Danian said to me, "Oh, yeah.  We have had that happen in our shower, too.  About once a year there is rat infestation in the sewers here."  Great!!  I told Damian that there are screw holes in the cover.  All that he needed to do was screw the cover down and that would fix the problem.  He said he would do that, and later on that afternoon, he did.  Of course, the screws he found were too long and they stick up a little above the cover; but, at least it is firmly in place now.  No rat can push it up.

Firmly in place, we hope!
Later on that afternoon, when we went to the panaderia (the bakery) we could not resist buying a brownie, in the shape of a RAT, completer with a toothpick tail and almond ears!
